Description
-----------
PINOCHLE is a four handed, single deck game. It plays the modern
American version commonly played by most players. It features nice
graphics that give the feeling of a real match between two partners
as the cards are passed, melded and played around the table. It
supports all the official rules of the game. Some of the annoying
illegal plays of a real game such as "reneges", miss deals and
kicking your partners leg are under control and you can concentrate
on your game without these little distractions.
PINOCHLE uses a formula system that was developed by the author to
determine the bid suits, bid power and maximum bid for the three
hands it controls. Details of these formulas are made available
to registered users and are not available from any other source.
Meld bids are supported during the first round of bidding. The user
controls all bidding and play of your own hand but is still
monitored by the program to prevent illegal plays.
All melds are made by PINOCHLE including the users hand.
The play of the game is as competitive as the bidding. All hands
controlled by the computer count trump, aces and track suits being
trumped. Every effort is made to clear out competitive trump as soon
as possible. If you don't pay close attention to the play of the
hand you will be at a disadvantage. Hints for are available for
bidding, passing and playing your cards, if needed during the game.
"Shoot the Moon" (take all tricks during play of the hands) is an
option available to all bid winners. This must be declared before
play of the hand begins. Be careful if you are asked "Think you can
take them all?". The program will offer this prompt only when you
have a very powerful hand but it doesn't mean it is possible. You
must determine this for yourself. Failure to "Shoot the Moon", if it
was declared, has a stiff scoring penalty.
A review of the original deal and the last bid made by each player
is presented after all scores of the hand have been totaled. This
feature allows you to examine how the hands were bid, the passes
made by each hand and the maximum bid the hand would have gone to.
"Where all that meld came from.", or in some cases the reason
for a SET hand.
Games can be saved and continued at some other time. This option is
available at the conclusion of each hand. The user can name each of
the players at the beginning of each game. If the players names are
changed, a new won/lost record is started for the new players.
PINOCHLE plays the game very near "Tournament" level and will be
challenging to players of all levels of expertise.
I have included a section at the end of PINOCHLE.DOC, "What Hoyle
left out", for those of you who are interested in learning the game.
Pinochle supports a pointing device, if one is installed, or can be
played from the keyboard.
Registration Information
------------------------
Registered users receive a "KEY" that unlocks the Won/Loss totals
played to date. They also receive a copy of our "Secrets of the
Game". This is a description of the formulas and strategies used
by PINOCHLE to play the game. This system was developed by the
author and is not available through any other source. This "KEY"
also turns off the Shareware registration screen and is good on
all future upgrades of the program ver 1.x.
Registered users also receive a $24 gift certificate good towards
the purchase of any item in the SAC Products sculpture line.
(minimum $50 order required.) Our catalog can be viewed from our web
site at http://www.oro.net/~saclgw/index.html or printed copies are
available for a small fee (deductable if a purchase is made).
A single copy of the registered version of PINOCHLE costs $24 (US).

System Requirements
-------------------
Personal computer running DOS, Windows or OS/2 Warp 3.0 with a
FAT partition. (Pinochle has not been tested on Warp 4.0)
Conventional DOS memory (640K)
A video card capable of displaying 256 or more colors, (VGA or
better).
Pointing device that is Microsoft compatible. (optional)
(Speed of the program will vary depending on processor installed.)
Installing PINOCHLE
-------------------
ALL users including DOS:
PINOCHLE is distributed in a zip file. You will need PKUNZIP to
extract the program files from it's compressed format. Then copy
all the program files into a single directory of your choice. e.g.,
c:\pinochle. Type PINOCHLE <enter> from it's resident directory to
launch the program.
WINDOWS 3.1 users: Pinochle runs great with Windows
To install on your Windows desktop:
Select File menu from the Program Manager
Select NEW
Select Program Item
Type in Description = Pinochle
Type in Command Line = c:\pinochle\pinochle.exe
Type in Working Directory = c:\pinochle
Shortcut Key = NONE
Run Minimized box = EMPTY (don't check it)
Select Change Icon Button
(Pick an icon to use)
Select OK
PINOCHLE should now be installed on your desktop. Move it to a
group or location of your choice.
If you encounter a problem with your mouse after running
PINOCHLE, you are probably using an older mouse driver that
is not compatible with Windows when it runs DOS programs.
Solve this by installing one of the Windows mouse drivers that
came on your original Windows program disks. Look for MOUSE.CO_
or MOUSE.SY_.
Refer to your Windows manual (page 240) for instructions to
expand and install one of these files.
Windows 95 users:
Install as a DOS program. Refer to your manual for specific
instructions.
OS/2 users: PINOCHLE runs great with WARP 3.0
To install on your OS/2 desktop:
Open OS/2 System
Open System Setup
Open Add Programs
Select Search for and select programs to add
Select OK
De-select any drives you don't want searched
Select Type of program to add as DOS only
Select OK
Select Other Programs
Select PINOCHLE.EXE from available program list
Select ADD push button
(Be sure Pinochle.exe is the only program listed in the ADD
program list)
Select OK
Pinochle should now be installed on your OS/2 desktop,
probably in a Dos Applications folder. Move it to any folder
you prefer.
